Modern architecture with Maori themes

Te Kohao Health, Kirikiriroa Marae

The pillar covers are reminiscent of kowhaiwhai panels.

The materials are modern, yet the style is traditional.
Post-modernist: corrugated iron with decoupage.

This fabulous traditional pare over the door highlights the traditional craft. Unfortunately the clutter of modern signage detracts from the elegance and craftsmanship of the pare.

The downward lights emphasise the kowhaiwhai motifs at night time.

The glass reflects the more traditional buildings erected at the time on a less substantial budget. Traditional Maori art is becoming more mainstream and it can now be seen more widely as the general public is becoming aware of its significance and value and as they are now beginning to appreciate it as a traditional Aotearoa New Zealand art form.
