Some of the problems with the names of the planets are that the details that western migrants brought with them with regard to stars, writing systems and scientific data gathering were distributed over the different tribes, but were integrated in different ways.

Maori were very well informed about the stars, but naming would have changed over the hundreds of years. Hence there are variations in names and spelling details. Immediately after the European migration transliteration of English words also became a linguistic option.

Of course, even the European system has no real consistency as some days are named after Roman gods, some Teutonic gods and one after a star. Sometimes in modern Maori the days are named just Day One, Day Two, Day Three etc.
